Before choosing business premises think about the geographical location, how easy is access for both customers, and if appropriate staff. Is there adequate car parking and support facilities nearby i.e. Bank, Post Office, Shops, Petrol Station.
WORKING FROM HOME
Working from home has the advantages of lower overheads. This can be an advantage when setting out in business. If you work from home then bear in mind that you still have to take Health and Safety rules into consideration as well as business insurance.
You may also require the permission of your landlord and local authority when working from home. This is because you have to seek permission from the local authority for change of usage. In addition, if you have to make structural alterations to your property to accommodate your business then Planning Permission should be sought (building regulations approval).
RENTING OR BUYING
In the long term, it may be advantageous to purchase premises as this will represent an investment. However this is a serious commitment when you are first setting up in business, as well as being expensive. If you are going to rent premises then make sure that you acquaint yourself with the lease agreement and ensure that there are no onerous clauses in the lease that will restrict your business activities.
If you do not want to work from home then chose your business premises carefully. The following factors should be considered:
